Findings

• Since 2010 the economy has grown by 1.8% a year on average, leaving out the pandemic. From 1956 to 2007 it grew by 2.7% a year

Notes

• Gross domestic product (GDP) is the value of everything produced in the UK. "Real" means adjusted for inflation (chained volume measures), so this is growth in the amount produced, not in its price.
• Each point compares a quarter with the same quarter a year before, which smooths out quarter-to-quarter noise. Figures are seasonally adjusted and are revised as more data comes in.
• Output fell sharply in 2020 during the COVID-19 lockdowns and rebounded in 2021.
